GUWAHATI: Gayatri Sharma, an accomplished performer from Assam who wowed the audience with her outstanding performance in the much-awaited movie "Agra," made history for the Assam film industry. Kanu Behl's film "Agra," which explores a person's sexual journey and delves deeply into the worlds of desire and male sexual inhibition, transports viewers on a journey through their sexual odyssey.
The audience stood up and offered a thunderous five-minute standing ovation to honour the film's brilliance during the premiere of "Agra" at the main festival in Cannes on the evening of May 24. The picture was welcomed with overwhelmingly positive reviews.
Agra, one of the four Indian films selected for the renowned Cannes Film Festival 2023, earned a spot in the Directors' Fortnight Section, confirming its stature as a must-see movie. After the triumph of his 2014 debut movie "Titli," which debuted in the Un Certain Regard category, this is Kanu Behl's second submission to Cannes.
Gayatri Sharma's performance in "Agra" demonstrated her remarkable acting skills. She was part of a talented ensemble cast that also included Rahul Roy, Priyanka Bose, and Ruhani Sharma. Gayatri's stellar performances in Emmy Award-winning Netflix web series including "Delhi Crime," "Leila," and "Decoupled" had already made her an audience favourite.
Gayatri has significant theatre experience and has worked with renowned directors to polish her acting abilities on stages in Delhi and Assam. Her ability has also been acknowledged on a global scale, where she made an enduring impression with her performance in a piece directed by British Director Pramila Le Hunte at the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Gayatri also enchanted audiences at the National Theatre of Scotland, where she collaborated closely with the Yuva Ekta Foundation. She gained even more recognition as a superb performer because of the widespread praise she received for her portrayal of an Alzheimer's patient in the director Geeta Lal Sahai's short film.
Gayatri's talent goes beyond local ventures as she has made remarkable cameos in films like Santwana Bordoloi's "Maj Rati Keteki" and the most recent "Ki Kowa Dosti" by Kenny Basumatary. Gayatri plays Babita in "Agra," lending her extraordinary talents to the film's compelling story.
