GUWAHATI: Bharat Ratna and Assam's Pride Bhupen Hazarika was a man of many talents. Hazarika took Assam and Assamese songs to the world stage.
He was a name known all over the world. Google on Thursday on the occasion of Bhupen Hazarika's 96th birth anniversary paid tribute to the great artiste with a creative doodle.
Bhupen Hazarika was honored with India's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna' posthumously in 2019 for his contribution to music and culture.
Hazarika is popularly known as "Sudankantha" in Assam. "Sudhakantha" means "one with a sweet voice". Hazarika also received the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award. Hazarika was known for his baritone voice which gave the songs a different vibe altogether.
Hazarika composed songs on various topics ranging from love to politics. It is to be noted here that Hazarika also was a member of the legislative assembly in Assam from the Naoboicha constituency.
Hazarika's songs 'Bistirno Parore,' 'Moi Eti Jajabor,' 'Ganga Mur Maa,' and 'Bimurto Mur Nixati Jen', 'Manuhe Manuhor Babe', 'Akaxi Ganga Bisora Nai' still rings in Assamese people's hearts.
On the occasion of Bhupen Hazarika's birth anniversary, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet in the Assamese language paid his tributes to the 'Bard of Brahmaputra' and said that without Bhupen Hazarika, Assam's identity is not complete.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also in a tweet remembered the great artiste's contribution in taking Assamese folk music and culture to the world stage.
