Heart Attacks on the Rise Among Youth: Causes and Precautions

Sentinel Digital Desk

GUWAHATI: The number of heart attacks is on the rise in recent times, unlike the old time when it was thought to affect only aged people, now more and more youth are falling victim to this illness. In the past few years, a large number of young people under the age of 50 years have died because of cardiac arrests. Here are some of the reasons that increase the risk of heart failure.

Changes in lifestyle, habits, diets etc are some of the key reasons for the rise in the risk of cardiac arrests. Other factors contributing to the same include inactivity, over-exertion, stress, insomnia, diabetes, obesity and hypertension. Smoking and drinking are also important causes of heart failure.

Lethargic lifestyles, poor dietary choices, increased stress levels, and physical activities without proper knowledge also lead to heart-related problems. Lack of physical activities, excessive consumption of alcohol and processed foods have also posed risks to cardiovascular health. Increased obesity leads to heightened cholesterol levels, insulin resistance and strain on the heart. Stress is related to the release of multiple hormones in the human body. Chronic stress leads to damage to blood vessels, elevating blood pressure, insomnia and further increases the risk of cardiac failure.

There are however some important points in mind regarding food habits and a healthy lifestyle, that can help prevent heart attacks. One of the most important among them is the implementation of a healthy diet. Emphasis should be placed on the consumption of plant-based food items, especially those which have high amounts of nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Healthy fats from olives, avocados, nuts and some fish also help in the reduction of bad cholesterol levels. Water intake should also be monitored properly as a part of the regular diet. Salt and sugar intake should be reduced as much as possible and so is the case for processed food which has high amounts of unhealthy fats, sugar and sodium.

Exercise is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Professional help must be sought to know the exact range of physical activity that a person must undertake in order to remain healthy based on their age, lifestyle, food habits, calorie intake, etc. This will help on protecting the body from both over-exertion as well as the lack of ample exercise. Yoga also goes a long way to help in terms of reduction of stress while giving other health benefits. Alongside physical health, mental health is also essential to ensure the overall well-being of a human being, and the same is true for maintaining a healthy heart.
