SRINAGAR: In a remarkable display of skill and efficiency, the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully rescued two injured mountaineers who were stranded on the perilous Thajiwas Glacier, located in the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg in Kashmir. The IAF's prompt response and swift operation saved the lives of the mountaineers, who were facing multiple fractures, hypothermia, and other severe injuries.
The official spokesperson for the PRO Defence Srinagar released a statement commending the IAF's achievement, stating that the rescue operation took place in the evening, ensuring that the mountaineers were saved just in the nick of time. The statement further emphasized that the helicopter used for the rescue, an IAF ALH Mk III, encountered a challenging environment with no suitable landing field on the glacier. Despite this obstacle, the IAF successfully executed a low hover operation to retrieve the stranded individuals.
"In a swift and successful operation today evening, IAF ALH Mk III helicopter rescued two injured civilian mountaineers in the nick of time from Thajiwas Glacier, one of whom had suffered multiple fractures, hypothermia and other injuries," PRO Defence Srinagar said in an official statement.
The IAF promptly shared visuals of the daring rescue operation on its official Twitter handle, showcasing the challenging snow-clad terrain and the courageous efforts of the rescue team. The visuals highlighted the determination and bravery of the mountaineers, as well as the professionalism and expertise of the IAF personnel involved in the operation.
The defence spokesperson explained that the two mountaineers, identified as Faisal Wani and Zeeshan Mushtaq, were first located by an IAF ground party amidst the inhospitable conditions of the glacier. With no possibility of landing, the IAF resorted to a low hover operation to ensure the safe evacuation of injured individuals. The entire operation, from the initial request for assistance to the successful transfer of the mountaineers to the IAF hospital, was completed in just over an hour, including the round-trip travel.
The Air Force Station Srinagar oversaw the rescue operation, taking charge of the launch of the helicopter and maintaining control throughout the mission. The IAF's swift response and seamless coordination in this operation once again showcased their dedication to saving lives, even in the most challenging and remote locations.
