Jammu & Kahsmir Bus Accident: A bus travelling from Amritsar to Katra crashed into a narrow gorge in the Jajjar Kotli neighbourhood, killing at least ten people.

NEW DELHI: In a tragic incident, a bus travelling from Amritsar to Katra crashed into a deep gorge in the Jajjar Kotli neighbourhood on Tuesday morning, killing at least ten people. The majority of the fatalities, according to the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Jammu, were Bihar citizens.

At least four seriously injured people, according to him, have been transferred to the Government Medical College and Hospital, and 12 more are receiving care at the neighbourhood PHC in Jammu.

According to sources, the pilgrims came from Lakhisarai in Bihar and were going to Mata Vaishno Devi for their child's religious ceremony. They belonged to a larger family.

Passengers reported that the driver of the vehicle, which had an Uttar Pradesh licence plate (UP 81 CT 3537) and was headed towards the Udhampur-Srinagar side of the highway, appeared to have lost direction and should have made a left turn nearly two kilometres prior to the accident.

In 2022, a bus carrying more than 30 security officers from the ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) and the Jammu and Kashmir Police met with an accident while travelling to Pahalgam, roughly 90 km from Srinagar, a significant rescue effort was undertaken. According to reports, six ITBP soldiers have died, and those who have been hurt are being flown to the Army Hospital in Srinagar.

Furthermore, health officials report that 19 ambulances are working on rescue operations.

Security personnel was seen at the scene performing the rescue in images released by sources. The bus reportedly lost control of its brakes and plummeted into a riverbed. The car has sustained total damage. The Amarnath Yatra required the deployment of the army.
