JNU To Impose Rs 20,000 Penalty On Students For Initiating Protest

NEW DELHI: In a new set of regulations, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) announced that students who hold dharnas may be penalised up to Rs 20,000.

The purpose of the new regulations, according to reports, is to control and enforce discipline among university students and staff.

According to the "Rules of Discipline and Proper Conduct of Students of JNU," students who hold gheraos or are accused of violence risk having their admissions revoked or facing fines of up to Rs. 30,000.

"All acts of violence and all forms of coercion, such as gheraos, sit-ins, or any variation of the same, which disrupt the normal academic and administrative functioning of the university and or any act which incites or leads to violence; lead to cancellation of admission or withdrawal of degree, denial of registration for a specified period, rustication up to four semesters, and/or declaring any part or the entire JNU campus out of bounds, expulsion," the 10-page rules state.

"Gheraos, laying siege or staging demonstrations around the residence of any member of the University Community, or any other form of coercion, intimidation, or disturbance of the right to privacy of the residents of the campus can lead to cancellation of admission or withdrawal of degree or denial of registration for a specified period, rustication up to four semesters, and/or declaring any part or the entire JNU campus out of bounds, expulsion, a fine, and/or other sanctions," it continued.

"Hunger strikes, dharnas, collective bargaining, and any other kind of protest by blocking entrance or exit of any academic and/or administrative complex or interfering with the movements of any member of the University community can result in a fine up to Rs 20,000," it continued.
