Justice Jaswant Singh Officially Becomes Chief Justice Of Tripura High Court: Center

AGARTALA: Justice Jaswant Singh has been appointed by the Central Government as the new Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. On February 22, he is scheduled to retire. In September 2022, it was suggested that Jaswant Singh take over as Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court in place of Justice Muralidhar, who had been recommended for transfer to the Madras High Court. Justice Muralidhar's relocation was not approved by the Center.

For this reason, on January 25, the collegium revoked its recommendation that Justice Jaswant Singh is appointed Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court and suggested that he be appointed to the position of Chief Justice of the High Court of Tripura instead.

The appointment was announced on Twitter by Kiren Rijiju, the minister of law. Acting Chief Justice Amarnath T. Goud of the Tripura High Court will be replaced by Justice Singh, the second-most senior judge on the Orissa High Court.

The collegium also suggested that Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, judge, be appointed CJ upon Justice Singh's retirement, which is scheduled to take place on February 22.

According to sources, on Sunday the Union government approved the appointment of chief justices for four high courts and made it possible for a woman judge to lead the Gujarat high court for the first time since it was founded in 1960. Upon taking her oath, Justice Sonia Giridhar Gokani, who was chosen to serve on the Gujarat High Court, would become the only female chief justice of a high court in existence at the moment.
