Srinagar: An Indian Army jawan succumbed to injuries sustained during a ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) on Wednesday (September 30). Lance Naik Karnail Singh was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries after the violation of the ceasefire in Krishna Ghati Sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch sector at around 8:30 pm in the evening yesterday.
"On 30 Sep 2020, Pakistan Army resorted to an unprovoked ceasefire violation on the line of control (LoC) in Krishna Ghati Sector, District Poonch (J&K). Own troops responded strongly to the enemy fire. In the incident, Lance Naik Karnail Singh was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries," Lt Colonel Devender Anand, the Defence PRO, Jammu, said in a statement, adding, "Lance Naik Karnail Singh was a brave, highly motivated and a sincere soldier. The nation will always remain indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty."
Since the beginning of this year, Pakistan has been accused of violating the bilateral ceasefire agreement signed by India and Pakistan in 1999. At least 24 civilians have been killed and over 100 injured in 3,186 ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the LoC so far this year.
Tensions between the two countries are at an all-time high over the abrogation of the Article 370 in Kashmiri, which gave special status to Kashmiris. Recent, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan raised the Kashmir issue at the United Nations (UN), as he has done in recent speeches to multilateral bodies, and criticised the Indian government on several issues.
Due to this, civilians living near the bordering areas are on edge as their lives and livelihoods have been endangered. The situation has been further complicated by India's standoff with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Tensions escalated when soldiers from the two countries engaged in a melee battle, resulting in the deaths of 20 Indian army jawans. According to reports, the Chinese side too incurred losses, but the government is yet to issue a statement in this regard.
