Indore: Madhya Pradesh is all set to empower the transgender community with an array of reforms in various policies that will come into force by the end of November.

Promotion of mass marriages for transgenders, legal aid for the right to parental property, financial assistance for sex reassignment surgeries, and law to punish those who cat-calls transgenders by offensive names are some of the highlights of the policy which seems like a boon to the community who has a long history of feeling unequal.

The government also plans to employ transgenders in government offices. It is time to sensitize local people and police officials and health workers about them.

And, in the long term, the government is planning on giving them legal rights.

One-stop centers, pension to persons of above 55years, shelter homes, and old-age homes are some other provisions of the proposed policy.

Earlier, the government had announced a compensation of 5 lakh for kin of 3-year-old, Prahlad, who had died in a 200-feet borewell in Niwari district. CM Chauhan had urged people not to leave any borewells open.
