MUMBAI: In a bizarre incident, a snake was found in Mumbai with its head covered with a used condom.
The checkered keelback snake was highly disoriented as it struggled to survive with the condom on its head and was finally rescued by a snake rescuer.
According to reports, the snake was spotted near the Green Meadows housing society in Mumbai's Kandivali (east) area.
Meanwhile, with one of the local residents identified as Mita Malvankar, a snake rescuer for help and rushed to the spot.
"I had received a call from a local resident, Vaishali Tanha, informing me that a snake was noticed moving in an erratic manner because a 'plastic bag' was covering its head. When I rushed to the location, I was shocked to see that someone had mischievously put a dirty, used condom on the keelback," Mita Malvankar told national daily TOI.
Further, Mita Malvankar noticed that the snake found it difficult to breathe owing to the "synthetic obstruction" and caught hold of it to remove the condom.
Meanwhile, Mita took the reptile to the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivali. Dr Shailesh Pethe, wildlife veterinary officer, checked the condition of the snake and said that it was released at a safe location in the forest after treatment.
"The snake visibly showed some signs of stress when it was brought to SGNP, but it did not have any external injuries. We later released it at a safe location in the forest. An offence has been registered against unknown persons by the forest officials," Dr Shailesh Pethe told TOI.
