NEW DELHI: Former deputy chief minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, who was detained with charges of corruption involving the excise policy, was brought before a New Delhi court on Saturday by the CBI.
Both inside and outside the Rouse Avenue Courts facility, there was a strong security presence.
The Aam Aadmi Party members and supporters held a demonstration outside the building and shouted protest signs.
As Sisodia's five-day CBI detention period expired on Monday, the agency brought him before special judge M. K. Nagpal and is likely to ask for his incarceration for questioning.
On Sunday night, the CBI detained Sisodia over the allegations of corruption in the creation and execution of the now-cancelled 2021–22 liquor policy.
Many members of the Aam Aadmi Party demonstrated on Saturday in central Delhi in support of top party official Manish Sisodia, who has been detained by the CBI in connection with the excise policy issue.
The demonstration broke out prior to Sisodia's court hearing on Rouse Avenue, just a short distance from the party office on Deen Dayal Upadhyay Marg.
The protesters shouted "Manish Sisodia ko riha karo" among other phrases.
AAP's Delhi convener had a discussion with some of the workers before they took to the streets. The party claims that Sisodia was detained in order to hinder the "excellent work" that the Delhi government is doing in the area of education.
As the CBI prepared to present the detained former deputy chief minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, before a local court at the conclusion of his five-day detention in the liquor policy case, officers from the Delhi Police, Rapid Action Force, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were stationed outside the CBI headquarters.
The CBI detained Sisodia over alleged irregularities in the formulation and execution of Delhi's new tax policy.
The opposition made accusations of wrongdoing, leading to the withdrawal of the policy.
According to a new bail plea Sisodia submitted to a court in the nation's capital, Sisodia's continued detention would serve no useful purpose because all recoveries in the case have already been completed.
