Narendra Modi Flags off New Vande Bharat Express

KOLKATA: The newest version of the Vande Bharat Express was flagged off virtually by the Indian prime minister today, December 30.

The new Vande Bharat Express connects the important railway junctions of Howdah and New Jaiplaiguri, which is very important in terms of both passenger and goods carriage. The day also holds a special significance as on December 30, 1943, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian flag in Andaman.

Earlier in the day, Narendra Modi performed the last rites of his mother Hiraben Modi. She passed away early in the morning due to age-related problems at an age of 100 years.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was present at the venue to flag off the new train. She conveyed her gratitude for this new project as well as conveyed her condolences on the loss of his mother. She also suggested Narendra Modi take a break.

"In the 21st century, the Government is making massive infrastructure in Indian Railways. Trains like Vande Bharat and Tejas are being made in the country. Railway stations are being modernized like Airports, New Jalpaiguri Station is also being developed on those lines. In the past eight years, Indian Railways have worked on the theme of modernization. In the past eight years, we have extended Metro Services to two dozen cities. Joka BBD Metro is a step in that direction," mentioned Narendra Modi while flagging off the new train. He virtually addressed the gathering at the Howrah station for the event.

He also mentioned the PM Gata Shakti initiative which aims to connect different modes of transport in the country. As well as the upcoming projects to connect the Ganga and Brahmaputra waterways and how they will lead to the growth of trade and commerce both within the country and with neighbouring Bangladesh.

The new train will cover a distance of 564 km in 7.45 hours. This will save three hours of travel time compared to other trains on this route, according to reports. The train will have only three stoppages namely Barsoi, Malda and Bolpur. This train will have a total of 16 coaches.
