National Education Day: Know History and Significance of the Day

National Education Day is celebrated each year on 11 November as the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, first education minister of Independent India

National Education Day is celebrated across the country each year on 11 November since the year 2008. The day is observed as the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of Independent India.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad has a huge contribution to the sector of education of the country as throughout his life he had shaped the system of education in India by bringing major changes. On National Education Day, the nation celebrates its contributions and passion in the field of education.

During his tenure as the minister of Education in India, various reputed institutions and boards were set up including the UGC, AICTE, Kharagpur Institute of higher education, the University education commission, the Secondary education commission, Jamia Millia Islamia, and IIT Kharagpur. Maulana Azad served the nation from 15 August 1947 to 2 February 1958 by becoming the most prominent educationist.

He was one of the great personalities among the Indian politicians and played a major role in the freedom movement of the country and later became well-known by building the foundation of a strong education system in India. Apart from his career in politics, Maulana Azad was also a great scholar in the field of Urdu Literature.

National Education Day was celebrated for the first time on 11 November 2008 when it was announced by the Human Resource Development to celebrate the day remembering the great son of India Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his birthday for his involvement in education.

The day is celebrated in schools and colleges by organizing various events focusing on the value of education such as competitions on essay writings and organizing seminars. Political leaders of the country including PM Modi remembered Maulana Azad on the National Education Day, 2021 as they paid tribute to him writing on tweeter.
