Navy Officers Arrested By CBI For Disclosing Confidential Information

A number of other serving officials of the Indian Navy who were in touch with the accused have been summoned for questioning by the CBI.

New Delhi: Three officials of the Indian Navy have been arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for leaking confidential information about the modernisation of a Kilo-class submarine going. Two of the officials are currently under service while one has retired.

According to national media, a high-level probe was ordered by the Indian Navy under a Vice Admiral and a Rear Admiral to investigate the source from which the information had been leaked. 

Official government sources said, "After getting inputs from agencies concerned, the CBI arrested a serving Navy officer of the rank of Commander (Lt Col equivalent in Army) who is currently posted in Mumbai for passing on unauthorised information related to the Kilo-class submarine modernisation project to retired officers."

A number of other officials who were in touch with the accused officials have been summoned for questioning by the CBI.

According to defence sources, the Indian Navy has been helping out the CBI in the ongoing investigations and are being fully cooperative.

A parallel investigation into the matter has also been conducted by a five-member team headed by a Vice-Admiral in the Indian Navy. 

The arrests were made after the Indian Navy and the CBI monitored the activities of retired officials. The data and hardware that were accessed by the arrested retired official during his service are also being checked.
