NEW DELHI: Indian cinema has witnessed numerous Hindu mythological characters which have been played by actors belonging from other religions. In the epic Mahabharata in the 1990s era, Firoj Khan had played the role of Arjun and it received acceptance from one and all.
Recently, a movie which is in a similar category (of a Hindu character being played by a Muslim actress) has hogged the media limelight. The film which is being referred to here is the Ramayan in which Sita's character is likely to be played by popular Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, but a large section of people have expressed their opposition over the same and demanded that the actress be changed.
The movie Ramayan, which is based on the Hindu epic Ramayana, will be directed by Alaukik Desai. As per various news reports, Kareena had allegedly demanded a hefty amount of Rs. 12 crore to essay the role of Sita in the film.
As soon as the news of Kareena going to play Sita's role in Ramayan spread, netizens took to social media to vent their dissatisfaction. A large number of people have claimed that Kareena, who is regarded as one of the best actresses in the B-town, has no respect towards Hinduism. On the other hand, a section of people voiced their opinion about replacing Kareena and vouched for Kangana Ranaut in that role.
Kareena, who is married to Bollywood superstar Saif Ali Khan, gave birth to her second son "Jahangir" in February. The name of the child had evoked strong criticism from various circles. Many are of the opinion that the couple kept their children's names in memory of Mughal or Afghan rulers.
As per some media reports, Deepika Padukone and Hrithik Roshan were about to be approached for the role of Sita and Rama in the film. However, nothing has been finalised yet.
