NEW DELHI: The committee leading the 'One Nation, One Election' drive headed by ex-president Ram Nath Kovind is making headway as it seeks public input to influence synchronized election plans in India. Established last September, this committee held its second meeting with Law Commission representatives who are concurrently investigating the prospect of coordinated polls.
The committee has released an official notification urging the public to share their suggestions on a dedicated website, onoe.gov.in or via email at sc-hlc@gov.in. The committee will review all recommendations received by January 15 while aiming to encourage active participation from the community in making decisions about this crucial issue.
The committee has initiated contact with six national political parties, 33 state parties and seven registered but unrecognised parties in order to obtain diverse viewpoints on the notion of conducting simultaneous elections. To guarantee a comprehensive input from across the political spectrum, they have issued a recent reminder.
As per its terms of reference, the committee has been tasked with investigating and proposing measures to conduct synchronized elections for Lok Sabha, state legislative assemblies, municipalities and panchayats. This involves a thorough evaluation of current constitutional protocols and legal stipulations. The committee is authorized to put forth amendments pertaining to significant legislations such as the Constitution of India, Representation of People Act (1950 & 1951) along with other relevant regulations.
Former President Kovind, an ardent proponent of the notion for simultaneous elections, has implored all political factions to unite in support of this idea that is beneficial for the country. The panel consists of notable personalities such as Home Minister Amit Shah and former Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad amongst others; their varied representation guarantees a thorough scrutiny on the proposition.
The nation is eagerly waiting for the transformation of its electoral landscape, which could be brought about by policymakers and an active citizenry working collaboratively. The committee has called upon public input in this regard.
