New Delhi: Jayashankar to lead Indian delegation to 19th NAM Summit in Uganda

External Affairs Minister S Jayashankar will hold special diplomatic engagements in Kampala and Nigeria, demonstrating India's commitment to NAM principles and bilateral relations

NEW DELHI: In an important diplomatic move, Minister for External Affairs S Jaishankar is set to lead the Indian delegation to the 19th Summit scheduled for January 19-20 in Kampala, Uganda. Closing with the theme ‘Deeper dialogue for a shared global heritage’, the conference brings together more than 120 developing countries, underlining the historical importance of the conference.

Ahead of the summit, External Affairs Minister Rajkumar Ranjan Singh is representing India at the NAM Foreign Ministers Meeting, while Foreign Minister V Muralitharan will attend the G-77 3rd Southern Summit, and both preside the special meet in India as a founding and leading NAM member, fully supports Uganda’s elected project and reflects its commitment to the group’s principles and values.

​​The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed India’s interest in participating under the leadership of Uganda.

Jayashankar is expected to hold talks with Ugandan leaders and NAM member state counterparts on the sidelines of the summit. The diplomatic process includes deliberations at the level of ministers and senior officials, setting the stage for strategic cooperation.

Following the NAM summit, Jayashankar will embark on an official visit to Nigeria from January 21-23, making it his maiden visit to the West African country. During the visit, he co-chairs the 6th India-Nigeria Joint Council Meeting (JCM), where India’s commitment to stronger bilateral relations will be emphasized.

Other engagements includes the opening of the Nigeria-India Business Council, speaking at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, interactions with CII business representatives and paying tribute to the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi.

The visit highlights the traditional friendly relations between India and Nigeria. Jayashankar’s participation in the regional meeting of Indian mission officials is expected to further strengthen bilateral ties. The visit is aimed at strengthening India’s global partnership and demonstrating its commitment to enhance cooperation on various fronts.
