Odisha: 3 Killed, Several Injured During Lord Jagannath's Chariot-Pulling Ritual

BHUBANESWAR: According to reports, at least three persons were killed and eight more were hurt in different instances in Odisha during Lord Jagannath's chariot-pulling rite.

According to reports, two people in Keonjhar district and one in Koraput district died after being electrocuted as a result of the chariots making touch with a live electric line. They also added that two other people were hurt. Jugal Kishore Barik, age 45, Barun Giri, age 50, and Biswanath Nayak, age 22, were named as the deceased.

Officials have also reported that a chariot's rope snapped in Puri, injuring six persons, including police officers. They were taken into the hospital at the district office.

The Rath Yatra Committee has filed a case with the Koratpur Sadar Police Station and accused the responsible power distribution department officials of being to fault for the accidents that resulted in the deaths.

The committee claimed in the lawsuit that despite a prior decision to halt power during chariot pulling, the corporation disregarded the order.

On the other hand, as many as six persons, including a nine-year-old child, were electrocuted on Wednesday during the 'Ulto Rath' yatra in the Kumarghat region of Unakoti district after a high-tension electricity wire came into touch with the top of the chariot. At least 30 additional people were hurt in the incident.

Seven of the injured people have been sent to the Unakoti District Hospital in Kailashahar's neighbouring sub-division. At least 15 additional worshippers are receiving medical care at the Kumarghat sub-divisional hospital.
