NEW DELHI: The Center is considering creating a "one nation, one policy" for organ donation and shipping throughout the nation.
"The domicile requirement will no longer be enforced, and all states have been informed of this decision by the Centre. Currently, a person in need can go to any state in the union and register for an organ donation and transplant. Prior to this, the state's organ donation laws mandated that the needy individual donate their organs at their residence "said a source in the Health Ministry.
According to the source, the Center has decided to remove a provision from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization's standards because it infringes on a person's right to life.
A person of any age can now register for an organ transplant, according to the source. Those above 65 are not permitted to register for organ donation or receive organ transplants, as per the rules. The Center, however, has chosen to remove this upper age limit. Now, anyone of any age can sign up to receive an organ, according to the source.
On January 9, the Indian government held a conference with representatives from each state to discuss the implementation of this strategy. Doctors had also encouraged the government to fight for mandatory deceased organ donation in September of last year.
According to sources, we are adding a chapter to the school curriculum to raise awareness of organ donation.
From 4,990 in 2013 to 15,561 in 2022, the overall number of organ transplants climbed by more than three times, according to data obtained from the Health Ministry. 12,791 (82%) of the 15,561 transplants involved living organs, while 2,765 (18%) involved deceased organs or cadaver transplants.
