NEW DELHI: Ashwini Vaishnaw, the minister of railways, announced on Friday that 535 stations are included in the One Station, One Product (OSOP) programme, which has 572 OSOP outlets.

The minister stated that OSOP strives to support the government's "Vocal for Local" goal in a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha. It "will offer new income opportunities for the disadvantaged parts of society and provide a market for local/indigenous items."

Vaishnaw noted that the programme gives OSOP outlets at railroad stations the opportunity to promote, market, and make locally produced goods prominently visible. "All applicants who meet programme objectives are allotted on a rotating basis. The trial programme began in March 2022.

According to the sources, The minister listed the product categories covered by this programme as local agricultural products, handicrafts/artefacts, textiles, handlooms, traditional clothing, and handicrafts.

The One Station One Product concept provides exhibition and sales facilities on railroad stations all across India in an effort to promote locally produced and specialised goods and crafts.

The goods are particular to the area. These include artefacts created by native tribes, handicrafts including world-famous wood carving, chikankari and zari-zardozi clothing designs, spices, tea, and other processed/semi-processed food items/products that are indigenous to the region.

Reports also claim that for the purpose of promoting and selling goods produced by regional manufacturers and enhancing their skills and way of life, Indian Railways places a stall, kiosk, or sale outlet at specific train stops.

The massive foot traffic that railway stations experience makes them mass interaction points with enormous possibilities for product marketing. In accordance with this idea, designated space will be made available at the station platforms for the construction of stalls for the marketing and promotion of regional specialities such as processed or semi-processed foods, handicrafts, artefacts, handlooms, local toys, leather goods, clothing, and instruments.
