PM Modi And Bangladesh PM Meet In New Delhi For Bilateral Talks On Defence, Trade

PM Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina will discuss issues related to trade, connectivity and defence today. They are set to sign pacts on Kushiyara river water sharing, training and IT cooperation in Railways, science, space and media.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday morning welcomed his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she was accorded the ceremonial Guard of Honour, before proceeding to Hyderabad House in New Delhi for bilateral talks.

During the bilateral talks, the Prime Ministers of India and Bangladesh are scheduled to discuss issues related to trade, connectivity and defence on Tuesday. The two countries are likely to sign agreements on water sharing on the Kushiyara river, as well as training and IT cooperation in Railways, science and space, including media cooperation.

On her upcoming talks with PM Modi, Sheikh Hasina said: "With friendship, you can solve any problem. So, we always do that."

Within a span of few hours after her arrival, Sheikh Hasina met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and discussed issues of bilateral interest and importance, sources said.

"Delighted to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh this evening. The warmth and frequency of our leadership level contacts is a testimony to our close neighbourly partnership," Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting.

The Bangladesh PM expressed her gratitude to India for its continued cooperation since the Liberation war, saying on Tuesday that she feels happy every time she visits the country.

"India is our friend. Whenever I come to India, it's a pleasure for me, especially because we always recall the contribution India has made during our Liberation War. We have a friendly relationship, we are cooperating with each other," Hasina told reporters.

Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to visit Moinuddin Chishti's dargah in Ajmer, Rajasthan on Thursday. The Bangladesh PM, who is accompanied by senior ministers, will also meet President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Earlier, on her arrival in New Delhi, Hasina was received at the airport by Union Minister of State Darshana Jardosh. "Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina is warmly welcomed by MoS Railways and Textiles @DarshanaJardosh on her arrival in New Delhi for a State Visit. The visit will further strengthen the multifaceted relationship between the two countries," tweeted Ministry of External Affairs' official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi.
