GUWAHATI: Dussehra is one of the main festivals of the majority of the Hindus across the world. It is celebrated as Vijaya Dashami or simply Dashami in the eastern parts of the country. It is the last day of the ten day long Durga Puja celebration which starts on the day of Mahalaya.

"Many many congratulations to all the countrymen on Vijayadashami, the symbol of victory. I wish that this auspicious occasion brings courage, restraint and positive energy in everyone's life," tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Prime Minster is scheduled to inaugurate the Kullu International Dussehra Festival today. It will continue till the October 11 and expected to bring more tourists to the region in this festive season. He will also open the AIIMS Bilaspur for the public and lay the foundation stone for the expansion of the National Highway between Pinjore and Nalagarh.

Several eminent Indians including the President and Vice President of the country also wished the citizens on the occasion.

The main celebration of Dussehra in Guwahati will take place in the premises of the Nehru Stadium. This year's event will showcase a 3D holographic light show for the visitors. A record 111 feet tall effigy of Ravana has been prepared to be set on fire this evening. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to be a part of this event. "Greetings and best wishes on #Dussehra", tweeted CM Sarma.

Dussehra signifies the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana in the epic battle of Ramayana, while Dashami is the end of the annual visit of Maa Durga to the mortal plane. Hence this day carries both bitter sweet memories for different sections of the country. Meanwhile all major cities across the state are expected to encounter heavy traffic by the evening as the idols of the Durga Puja will be taken out for immersion in the major water bodies.
