NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to the people of Sikkim on their Statehood Day, the celebrations for which was held on Tuesday.
PM Modi also said he had prayed for Sikkim’s development to continue.
Taking to his Twitter handle, the Prime Minister posted: “Statehood Day wishes to my sisters and brothers of Sikkim. This is a wonderful state, blessed with exceptional natural beauty and hardworking people. The state has attained immense progress in various areas notably organic farming. I pray for the continuous development of Sikkim.”
Meanwhile, celebrations also took place at Raj Bhavan in Assam on Tuesday, during which Governor Gulab Chand Kataria celebrated the statehood day of Sikkim at Durbar Hall in the Raj Bhavan campus in Guwahati. The celebrations were aimed at taking national unity to a greater height.
Notable, Raj Bhavan Assam celebrated the statehood day of Sikkim as a part of Central Government’s decision to celebrate the statehood days of different states in the Raj Bhavans across the country.
As the chief guests, former chief secretary to the government of Assam and Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) chairperson Tshering Y Das attended the programme.
On the occasion, Das stated, “We belong to an ancient civilization and the world has always looked upon us as a source of knowledge, wisdom and spiritual inspiration.
“Being a citizen of this great nation it is really a matter of pride and privilege.
“Although physically, we are 28 states and eight Union Territories and the diversity of the country is mind boggling in terms of biodiversity, topography and demography yet we are all united with a common identity of being a proud Indian.”
Das’s wife also spoke on the occasion, saying that under the Central and the State government’s guidance and the vision for the future, Sikkim now boasts of the second highest per capita GDP in the country.
Sikkim is also known as a pioneer in organic farming and represents a model for sustainable development.
“The unique cultural traditions, Buddhist destinations, biodiversity, the great Kanchenjunga and the friendly people of the state have made it a great destination,” she said.
She also added that Sikkim continued to be an example of peace, harmony and brotherhood between people belonging to different demographic strata.
Ms Das described statehood day as an appropriate occasion to celebrate the ‘friendship, unity and mutual bonhomie’ between Sikkim and Assam and also with other states.
S.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, Commissioner and Secretary to the Governor, presented the welcome address.
Jashoda Chetri, Assistant Resident Commissioner at Sikkim House, Guwahati also read out the message from the Chief Minister of Sikkim.
Former State Chief Information Commissioner H.S.Das and members of the Sikkimese community also attended the programme.
