Police Nab Odisha Man Who Married 18 Women, Including 1 From Assam

New Delhi: In one of the bizzare incidents, a person named Bibhu Prakash Swain from Odisha is believed to have allegedly married more than 18 women, including 1 from Assam and was arrested before his next two weddings.

According to reports, the 67-year-old, Swain posed as a 51-year-old doctor and persuaded personalities like professors, lawyers, medics, and a paramilitary officer all over the country to tie the knot.

As per the report by AFP, Swain claimed that he was on a chunky salary, and used fake identification cards and appointment letters to bolster his credentials and family background.

The report further claimed that he did this initially for money, and some sexual pleasure.

Sanjiv Satpathy police officer led a team and nabbed Swain after months on his trail, discovering his multiple identities, bank accounts and plans for two weddings in February and March.

''He was always very persuasive and only targeted successful single, widowed or divorced women in their late 40s,'' Satpathy was quoted as saying by AFP.

The accused used to borrow his new wives money and jewellery to help him with an emergency.

According to police, Swain married has tie knot with more than 18 times. To discover more details, the police team is now going through his mobile phone records where he saved his wives' contacts -- as Madam Delhi, Madam Assam or Madam UP -- named after the places where they stayed.

However, his misdeeds wouldn't have come to the fore until and unless a 48-year-old wife who after discovering the fact that the person is already married to at least seven other women.

Following the complained by the said woman, police launched a probe into Swain's multiple lives in May 2021 and contacted each woman separately about their shared predicament.

"This is when we came in and made discoveries about his long history of cheating, impersonation and deceit," Satpathy added.

Swain, who is a lab technician, born in a small village in Odisha, first married in 1978 and has three children -- two of them doctors and one a dentist -- with his first wife.
