NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra today attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi after a video had surfaced on social media showing an SUV running over some protesting farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh.

On Sunday night, a violent clash erupted between a group of protesting farmers and Union Minister Ajay Misra's son Ashish Misra's convoy leaving behind 8 people including 4 farmers dead. Priyanka Gandhi was detained by the UP police on her way to the violence-hit area.

The Congress leader heavily criticised and demanded PM Modi arrest Union Minister Misra's son. She said that the farmers fought for the freedom of the country, but today they are fighting for their rights. " Farmers' sons are in the Defence Forces.

They are protecting our country. But what the government does for the farmers? she added. She also criticised the Prime Minister who has visited Lucknow to observe " Azadi Ki Amrit Mahotsav". Earlier, the Opposition party lashed out at the Prime Minister for his silence over the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

Earlier, Union Minister of state for home Ajay Kumar Mishra Teni, his son, and other people were booked after a complaint was lodged by farmers in connection with Sunday's violence in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur district.

Lakhimpur Kheri superintendent of police (SP) Vijay Dhull informed that an FIR was filed under IPC section 302 for murder, 120-B for criminal conspiracy, and 147 for rioting at Tikunia police station.

Police sources said that the violence erupted after a car had hit protesting farmers following which eight people were killed in Lakhimpur Kheri. They said that four farmers were killed after allegedly being hit by a convoy and four others who were travelling in one of the vehicles were beaten to death.

The farmers were protesting against the three central farm laws.
