GUWAHATI: As the counting nears the end in the three Northeastern states of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura, the choice of the public has come to view. All the states have voted towards giving another chance to the previous regimes in these states.

The counting of votes started at 8 AM on Thursday after the polling was conducted on February 16 in Tripura, and February 27 in Meghalaya and Nagaland. The counting was conducted amidst tight security to prevent any untoward incident. Apart from the deployment of security forces, cameras were also placed in counting stations to ensure that there are no discrepancies in the process. The Election Commission had also deployed observers at multiple levels of the counting process.

The counting of the votes for the state of Tripura was the first to be completed. The Bharatiya Janata Party took the lead in the state by bagging 32 seats out of the total 60, thus enabling it to form the government on its own. Its ally partner Indigenous People's Front of Tripura could manage only one seat. First-timer, TIPRA Motha bagged 13 assembly seats allowing it to be the lead opposition party, followed by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) with 11 seats. Congress also managed to grab 3 seats.

In the state of Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party managed to win 25 seats while its ally Bharatiya Janata Party managed to take 12 seats, and thus retaining the power to form the government again. But the main news from the state was the election of the two women to the house. This is the first time that the Nagaland Assembly will see the presence of women with the election of Salhoutuonuo Kruse and Hekani Jakhalu.

The National People’s Party won 25 seats in the Meghalaya Assembly while they are leading in two more seats, for which the counting is still going on. Conrad Sagma won with a huge margin but his brother James Sangama lost by a very narrow margin of just 7 votes. The United Democratic Party managed to get 11 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party and Trinamool Congress got 2 and 5 seats respectively. Indian National Congress also got 5 seats in the state assembly.
