NEW DELHI: Early on Saturday, a rocket launcher was used to target a police station in the border town of Tarn Taran, according to the authorities. In Punjab, there have been five similar incidents in the past 12 months.
Around one in the morning, a projectile struck the Sarhali Police Station on the Tarn Taran District's Amritsar-Bathinda Highway.
Unknown criminals allegedly fired a rocket-launcher-style weapon at the police station in Sarhali from National Highway 54 (ASR-Bathinda), breaking the inner wall, the doors' mirrors, and a door scroll. As of yet, no injuries have been recorded.
After that, a police team led by the SSP of Tarn Taran arrived on the scene and found the rocket inside the police station as well as an article in the shape of a pipe (which was a component of the rocket-launcher-type weapon) on the National Highway.
The police station's iron gate and the sanjh kendra were both struck by the rocket launcher. At the time of the incident, SHO Prakash Singh, the duty officer, and eight police employees were present inside the police station.
In another similar incident, The intelligence headquarters of the Punjab Police in Mohali was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) earlier this year, on May 8.
There was no casualty because the attack happened late at night, outside of business hours. According to police, a vehicle in the parking lot was used to hurl the grenade, which caused damage to glass panes and a portion of a wall.
When a grenade was thrown at the main gate of the Crime Investigation Agency headquarters in Nawanshahr on the evening of November 7 of last year, the police officials there also narrowly avoided injury.
On November 21, 2021, two weeks later, attackers on motorcycles threw another grenade close to the Triveni gate of the Army's cantonment in Pathankot.
On March 9, 2022, the police post at Kalma Morh in Ropar on the Nurpur Bedi-Nangal route was the target of a similar attack, which resulted in damage to its side wall.
