New Delhi: The Reserve Bank of India has become the first central bank in the world to have more than one million followers on its Twitter handle.

On the occasion of having more than one million followers, Shaktikanta Das, governor of RBI, congratulated his colleagues. He has a separate Twitter handle with 1.37 lakh followers.

"RBI Twitter account reaches one million followers today. A new milestone. Congratulations to all my colleagues in RBI," he tweeted.

The monetary authority of India has beaten the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank on Twitter by emerging as the most popular central bank by a wide margin on the microblogging site with one million followers.

The achievement is commendable because the 85-year-old Reserve Bank is a latecomer to the world of Twitter as it created its account in January 2012.

According to the latest information available on RBI's Twitter handle '@RBI', the number of followers has increased from 9.66 lakh on September 27, 2020, to over 10 lakh on Sunday.

At the second slot is the Central bank of Mexico (Banco de Mexico) with 7.74 lakh followers, followed by the Bank of Indonesia with 7.57 lakh.

The US Federal Reserve, the world's most powerful central bank has 6.77 lakh followers and in the fourth slot.

Currently, the RBI handle is followed by as many as 10,00,513 people around the world.
