NEW DELHI: Sarojini Naidu, who is also known as the Nightingale of India, was born on 13th of February, 1879 in Hyderabad. Apart from being an iconic poet, she also had tremendous contributions as an activist. Naidu played immense role in India's fight and journey for freedom.
Sarojini Naidu delivered poems for children in various genres including patriotism, romance and tragedy. People loved her for her soulful work, which led her to become one of the most renowned writers of all time.
The Nightingale chose the path of literature at the age of 12. One of her piece called Maher Muneer, which is a play, received ample amount of love and recognition. She gained appreciation from all over the world. At the initial stage when Sarojini Naidu was just 16 years old, she was awarded with a scholarship from the Nizam of Hyderabad.
Later, she pursued her education from the London's Kings College. Sarojini Naidu became a part of Indian nationalist movement and became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi and his idea of Swaraj. She later paved her way on politics and was appointed as the President of the Indian National Congress in 1925.
She became the Governor of United Provinces in 1947. It is worth mentioning here that, Sarojini Naidu was the first female to hold the position of Governor in India.
