NEW DELHI: Shibu Soren, a former chief minister of Jharkhand and the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, has been admitted to the Ranchi-based Medanta Hospital. The hospital's medical staff reported that Soren was having respiratory problems. In addition, he has infections in his kidney and lungs. Soren is receiving more therapy, and doctors are now assessing his condition.
Later in the evening, Hemant Soren, the current chief minister of Jharkhand, paid a visit to his father at the hospital. One of the founding members of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha is Shibu Soren. He is one of the few individuals who pushed for Jharkhand's statehood, which led to it becoming India's 28th state in November 2000.
Jharkhand was formerly a region of South Bihar, which at the time was a very mineral-rich region with a sizable tribal population. The venerable elder statesman of Jharkhand politics has won seven elections to the Lok Sabha. He has served as Jharkhand's chief minister twice and three times as a minister for the Union.
When Shibu Soren first took office as chief minister in 2005, he was forced to resign nine days later because he was unable to secure a majority in the Jharkhand Assembly, which has 81 members. However, luck was not on his side.
In 2008, he was elected chief minister of Jharkhand once more. However, he could only hold the position for four months because, in January 2009, he lost the Tamar by-election to Gopal Krishna Patar (Raja Peter), a candidate for the Jharkhand Party.
