New Delhi: Renowned Singer Daler Mehndi has been sentenced to a two year jail term by the Patiala court in connection with a human-trafficking case dating back to 2003.

The verdict came out in a review hearing of the 2018 judgement that had also found the singer to be guilty and had ordered him two year jail imprisonment. But, he was released on bail.

The case dates back to 2003 and a total of 31 cases have been lodged against Daler Mehndi and his brother Shamsher Singh.

The renowned singer has been convicted under sections 406, 420, 120B, 465, 468, 471 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Indian Passport Act.

Mehndi was taken into custody after his bail plea was rejected by the court of Additional Sessions Judge HS Grewal.

"It is pertinent to mention that Daler Mehndi was punished for two years on 16.03.18 by the JMIC Patiala. Now he is being sent to Patiala Jail. The Patiala police have already taken him into its custody," the order reads.

It was alleged that the accused took money to the tune of Rs. 1 crore on the pretext of taking them abroad.

A complainant going by the name of Bakhshish Singh, alleged that the deal never materialized and the accused did not return the money.

The complainant alleged that he was duped of a humongous amount of money by the accused, who had vowed to take him abroad as part of his musical group and to leave him in some western country to settle there.

After the conclusion of the investigation process, police officials stated that the singer along with other performers were part of a well-organized racket to illegally take youth out of Punjab to western countries by making them part of musical troupes.
