NEW DELHI: In the aftermath of the tragic train accident that occurred in Balasore district, Odisha, South Eastern Railway's General Manager, Archana Joshi, has been removed from her position. The incident, which involved three trains, stands as one of the worst rail accidents in India in nearly three decades. On June 2, the collision resulted in nearly 300 fatalities and over 1,100 injuries.

In response to the disaster, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw conducted a meeting with key officials from the District Magistrate's office, the Superintendent of Police, and representatives from the State government in Balasore. During the meeting, the minister announced financial assistance for the development of Bahanaga village and the local hospital. A sum of Rs 1 crore was allocated from his MP local area development (LAD) fund, and an additional Rs 1 crore was pledged from Railway funds.

Ashwini Vaishnaw's experience in disaster management, particularly during his tenure as a collector in Balasore district, proved invaluable during this crisis. Having successfully handled a super cyclone situation in the past, Vaishnaw quickly led a team of over 2300 officials to the accident site to coordinate rescue and relief operations and oversee the restoration of the rail line.

The tragic incident, which took place near Bahanaga Bazar station, resulted in 287 deaths on the spot, while six others succumbed to their injuries in hospitals. Unfortunately, 81 bodies remained unidentified due to multiple claimants, and these have been preserved in containers procured from Paradip Port.

With the goal of improving railway operations and safety in the region, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved Anil Kumar Mishra as the new General Manager of South Eastern Railway. Mishra's appointment comes in the wake of the need for strong leadership following the devastating accident.

The aftermath of the Balasore train tragedy continues to weigh heavily on the affected families and communities. As the nation mourns the loss of lives, efforts to identify the remaining bodies and provide support to the victims' families remain a priority. Meanwhile, Anil Kumar Mishra takes on the responsibility of ensuring improved safety measures and efficient railway operations in the South Eastern region.
