NEW DELHI : A game-changer in the field of education has been announced by the University Grants Commission (UGC). UGC has put forward the draft norms which will provide access to the foreign universities and leading educational institutions to establish campuses in India.

M Jagadesh Kumar, the UGC chairperson announced the draft norms on 5th January, Thursday. It declared the setting up campuses of foreign higher educational institutions in line with National Education Policy (NEP).

The minister further appealed for suggestions and feedbacks on the same from the general public. The measure has been undertaken to rebuild India's highly regulated education system through globalisation

It will enhance the existing education structure and allow students to pursue foreign qualifications in an affordable cost. Furthermore, this new step will make the country globally attractive in the field of education.

It is worth mentioning that, decisions to bring foreign institution set ups in India were earlier announced back in 1995. However, the bill did not received any sort of recognition. Again in the year 2005-2006, the draft law stayed confined to the Cabinet stage. Interestingly, PM Narendra Modi's era has managed to achieve success regarding this matter.

M Jagadesh Kumar claimed the approval of UGC for the foreign universities to set up their campuses in the country is mandatory. There are certain necessities that needs to fulfilled by the Higher Education Institutions to bring in their campuses.

This includes - the concerned university has to be ranked among top 500 in overall or subject based global ranking. Those universities which are ranked for the subjects, will include the same subjects in their respective Indian campuses.

Top international universities such as America's Yale, Stanford, Harvard and British institutions such as University of Cambridge will be offered access to India, in order to impart top level education without any sort of complications.
