Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took a dig at the Gandhi family on March 14 by blaming the family for the downfall of the Congress party. The outspoken CM is of the view that Gandhi's have led the Grand Old Party to a disastrous path.

"It's the Congress party's internal matter and I don't want to comment on whether the party should continue with the Gandhis leading them or not.But the successive electoral defeats have proved that the Gandhis can't take Congress to victory. Like this, Congress will not even be visible in panchayat level," the CM remarked while addressing the media in the sideline of the state budget session that started on March 14.

After the recent poll debacle of the Congress party, the Gandhi's were heavily criticized and were bashed left, right and centre. Their critics have said that Gandhi's must step down and pave way for someone else, someone who can revive the Grand Old Party.

On the other hand, D.K.Shivakumar, a Gandhi loyalist and the current president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, has argued that the Congress will crumble if the Gandhi's do not remain at the helm of the party.

However, there were speculations about a possible change of guard in the party following their disastrous performance in the recently concluded assembly elections in five states. A five-hour-long meeting of the Congress Working Committee took place in 24, Akbar Road, the party headquarters, and Congress spokesperson KC Venugopal said that the CWC has expressed faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi.

Venugopal added that every worker of the party wants Rahul Gandhi to lead the party and he went on to say that the new party president will be chosen at the next Congress election.

The CWC, the topmost decision-making body of the Grand Old Party, had decided that Sonia Gandhi will continue to lead the party until the election for the post of Congress president is held.
