Guwahati: Actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol today filed his nomination papers from the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat and assured that he will always be there for the people.

Addressing a rally at Gurdaspur in Punjab, Sunny Deol said, "I don't know much about politics but I am a patriot." Before filing his nomination papers, Deol visited the famous Golden Temple in Amritsar and offered prayers.

Deol's father and Bollywood actor, Dharmendra also tweeted saying, "We are asking for your support. If you support us, the victory will be yours. The victory will be of my brother and sisters of Punjab and the beautiful Gurdaspur."

Dharmendra had also represented BJP from Bikaner Lok Sabha constituency in 2004 and had also won the seat. His wife Hema Malini is also a member of the BJP and a sitting MP from Mathura.

Sunny Deol has joined the party on April 23 in New Delhi in the presence of union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman and Piyush Goyal. Joining the party a week before, Deol said that he was looking forward to work with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asserted that his work will do the talking.

The Prime Minister had also met Deol on Sunday and posted a photo of the meeting along with a message on Twitter stating that he was impressed with Deol's passion to make a better India. The PM also said in the tweet, "What struck me about Sunny Deol is his humility and deep passion for a better India. I am happy to meet him today. We are all rooting for his victory in Gurdaspur. The PM said that they both agree- Hindustan Zindabad Tha, hai aur rahega.

Deol has already come under electoral crosshairs with party's rival Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh whom he termed as a filmi fauji.

The actor held his first roadshow at Barmer in Rajasthan on Saturday.

Punjab is scheduled to hold the Lok Sabha polls on May 19 for all the 13 seats and the counting of votes will be held on May 23.
