CHENNAI: In a recent update, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised concerns about Cyclone Michaung, predicting heavy to very heavy rains in parts of Tamil Nadu until December 6. The cyclone is intensifying in the Bay of Bengal, prompting authorities to issue warnings and precautionary measures.
Starting on December 3, the northern Tamil Nadu coast and the southern Andhra Pradesh coast are expected to experience heightened rainfall and increased wind intensity. This is attributed to Cyclone 'Michaung,' developing in the Bay of Bengal, and anticipated to make landfall along those coasts around the evening of December 4.
The forecast extends to coastal Andhra Pradesh, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected from December 3-5. Additionally, isolated areas in north coastal Tamil Nadu, south Odisha, and south coastal Odisha are likely to experience heavy rainfall on December 4. On December 5, similar weather conditions are expected in isolated parts of south Odisha, south coastal Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, and Telangana.
December 6 brings the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, south Odisha, and adjoining south coastal Odisha. Pockets of Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Puducherry, and Karaikal may also witness heavy rainfall on the same day.
The IMD has issued a warning until December 5, advising fishermen not to venture into specific parts of the Bay of Bengal due to squally wind speeds and potential gale winds. The warning emphasizes winds reaching 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph over the Westcentral Bay of Bengal and the south Andhra Pradesh coast.
Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in various regions, including east Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Mahe on December 2. As the cyclone progresses, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds are likely to prevail over Chhattisgarh from December 4-6, along with similar weather conditions in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 4.
The low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression and is projected to further intensify into a cyclonic storm. It is anticipated to reach the northern Tamil Nadu coast and the southern Andhra Pradesh coast on the evening of December 4. The cyclone is expected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5.
According to Sunanda, the Managing Director of the Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, a low-pressure system that was developing in the Bay of Bengal region has intensified into a 'depression' and is expected to intensify further into a 'cyclonic storm'. She emphasized the intensification of the system, noting its movement in a northwest direction toward the North Tamil Nadu Andhra coast. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and urging residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions in the wake of Cyclone Michaung's impending impact.
