New Delhi: The Lamborghini chicken has been rightly called so due to its deep pigmentation and is considered the world's most expensive chicken.

The original name of this breed of black chicken is Ayan Cemeni and is known for its highly pigmented black body. The bones, flesh and organs of this breed of chicken are also black. This is a result of a genetic condition called fibromelanosis which causes its tissues to have excessive pigment.

National Geographic has called the bird the 'most deeply pigmented creature' that exists in nature. However, the black chicken lay eggs that are cream-coloured.

This breed of chicken is found in Indonesia and has been said to have originally come from the islands of Java. In 1998, a Dutch breeder, Jan Steverink, imported the chicken to Europe.

Sweden's Bohuslän-Dals svarthöna, Vietnam's Black H'Mong, and the Silkie all have features that are similar to this black chicken. These breeds of chicken have the same 'complex rearrangement in the genome' that can be traced to a single ancient chicken, as per Swedish geneticist Leif Andersson.

Since it has been first discovered, the Ayam Cemani has been known by many other names. They are called as the 'world's most bewitching chicken', the 'lamborghini of poetry' and the 'Goth' chicken.
