DEHRADUN: In yet another controversial remark, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat in an event said that poor families should produce more children to get more government ration.

This comes days after he was slammed for his comment on women wearing ripped jeans, who according to Rawat were setting a 'wrong example' in society.

Addressing an event in Nainital's Ramnagar, Rawat said that poor families who struggled to feed themselves amid the Covid pandemic should have had 20 children if they wanted more rations from a central government scheme.

"Every household was given five kg rations. If 10 (people in a home) got 50 kg, then 20 got a quintal (100 kg). But some were jealous that two people got 10 kg and 20 got a quintal. Why? When there was time you only gave birth to two... why not 20?" Rawat was quoted.

After lockdown was announced due to the pandemic the government has been distributing rations under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, which offers five kg of food grains and one kg of pulses per person per household.

The newly sworn-in Chief Minister of Uttarakhand while dismissing that families with fewer children were getting less ration, rather suggested to produce more children.

Moreover, during the same event, he also blamed the United States for "200 years of rule in India". Referring to the handling of Covid-19 in India, which according to him was better under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi he said that "India performed better than the country who ruled India for 200 years."

While confusing the United Kingdom with the United States of America he said, "As opposed to other countries, India is doing better in terms of handling COVID19 crisis. America, which enslaved us for 200 years, which ruled the world, under whose empire it was said the sun didn't set...recorded more than 2.75 lakh deaths due to Covid-19 and is still struggling."

Congress Leader Randeep Singh Surjewala taking a swipe at Modi, tweeted "Modi ji also brings unique diamonds one by one!"
