Guwahati: Tirupati temple will no longer provide its devotees with laddus packed in polythene bags. Bringing a revolution into its long-practiced system, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) management has decided to go eco-friendly and replace the polythene packets with food grade paper boxes. This is indeed a commendable and exemplary step taken by the temple management.
In fact, it is not an initiative of the temple only, as the Tirupati city also has successfully implemented a ban on single-use covers, plates and cups made of plastic. This shows the hill town of Tirumala taking baby steps towards being eco-friendly and that is something to be followed and learned by every big city and places based in rest of the country.
The temple management took the decision of using food grade paper boxes for providing the laddus only after mulling various options, like using biodegradable plastic covers and cloth/jute bags. Finally, they settled in paper boxes like those of the sweet shops and bakeries.
