Trichy: In a bid to scare people flouting lockdown norms, cops in Tamil Nadu let loose 'COVID patient' on two-wheeler riders.
According to reports, two-wheeler riders on the Vangapalayam Pirivu check post in Karur, who ventured out during lockdown hours, have been getting the shock of their lives after a "Covid-19 patient" started getting on to their pillion seat without permission.
It takes a while for many to realize with much relief that it was actually stage-managed by the police to stop people from going out unnecessarily.
On Friday, as the police halted motorists at the check post for inquiry, a youth jumped onto the pillion seat of one of the riders requesting to be dropped home. Police personnel suddenly moved away while informing the motorist that the 'patient' had actually escaped from the hospital in the mid of his Covid treatment and wants to go home.
"We tell the rider that the patient was roaming on a motorcycle like them and now got infected with the coronavirus. He could not see the misery of patients in the hospital and therefore escaped from there," said T Ramesh, inspector of Vengamedu police station
Ramesh said he could find a slight decrease in the number of commuters coming out unnecessarily after their campaign. He said their intention was not to create panic among people as only youth who appear to be out unnecessarily are targeted during the campaign.
Earlier in 2020 also, the police in Tiruppur was also on lockdown implementation duty at a road junction and they had an ambulance parked on the roadside with a person dressed up as a coronavirus patient.
The police rounded up some youths who were on the road without any valid reason and forced them into the ambulance, saying they will have to undergo a coronavirus test in Coimbatore along with the person who was already sitting inside the van.
The person who was already inside the van wearing mask and protective attire asked the youths whether they wanted coronavirus and also started moving towards them.
The terrified youths tried to get out through the van window but the police pushed them back. After some time, the police opened the door of the van and the youths tumbled out in fear.
The police then explained to them that the person inside the van was a fake patient and the drama was enacted to teach them a lesson.
