NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident aboard the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express, Railway Protection Force (RPF) Constable Chetan Singh has been charged with murder and multiple offenses following a deadly shooting that claimed the lives of his senior officer and three passengers. The tragic event unfolded on July 31, leaving passengers in disbelief and authorities scrambling for answers.
The accused, Constable Chetan Singh, reportedly went on a rampage after 5 AM on that fateful day. Armed with an automatic weapon, he first targeted and killed RPF Assistant Sub-Inspector Tika Ram Meena, his own senior officer, along with another passenger in the B5 coach. The victims were identified as Abdul Kadarbhai Mohammed Hussain Bhanpurwala, a 48-year-old resident of Nalasopara in Palghar, and Asgar Abbas Sheikh, a 48-year-old resident of Madhubani in Bihar. Tragically, a third passenger identified as Sadar Mohammed Hussain also lost his life in the horrific incident.
Following the shooting, Chetan Singh continued his violent spree by shooting two more passengers on the train. Panic ensued among the passengers, leading them to take decisive action by pulling the emergency chain, which brought the train to a halt near Mira Road station. Authorities swiftly responded to the emergency call and apprehended Singh as he attempted to flee the scene with his weapon.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) took custody of the accused and filed charges of murder against him. Additionally, Singh has been charged under the provisions of the Arms Act for the unlawful use of his weapon during the attack. As the investigation progressed, new charges were added, including IPC Section 153A, which accuses him of promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc. Other charges in the FIR include Section 363 (kidnapping), Section 341 (wrongful confinement), and Section 342 (wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement).
Presented before a Mumbai court, Singh's police custody has been extended until August 11. While he claims to be mentally unfit, authorities are skeptical and have not accepted this defense. During legal proceedings, Singh's wife and mother provided statements and submitted his medical documents to aid in the investigation.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns about the safety and mental well-being of law enforcement officers. As the case unfolds, the nation awaits justice for the victims and a thorough examination of the circumstances that led to this tragic event.
