DEHRADUN: Multiple major earthquakes that shook different parts of the world in the last few months have triggered the fear of an impending major earthquake in the Himalayan region as well. The recent tremor in Tajikistan- Pakistan border only increased those fears.

The intensity of the earthquake was mentioned to be 6.6 by the USGS and it took place at 10:17 PM on Tuesday. The source was said to be 61 km from Eshkashem in Tajikistan but tremors were felt by people more than 1000 km away. And about 280 million people across India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan felt the tremors.

The Meteorological Department of Pakistan recorded an intensity of 6.8 in the main earthquake, followed by a 3.7 intensity aftershock originating in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. It caused severe damage in parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, including the loss of several lives and property at many places. Several Indian states including Delhi, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Kashmir reported feeling the tremors.

Speaking to the media about the earthquake, a scientist with the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dr Ajay Paul mentioned that a major earthquake might take place in the Himalayan region soon. He also mentioned that the source of this quake was very deep beneath and surface and tremors were felt across a very large region while highlighting that the Himalayan region falls under the Seismic Zone V, meaning that it has a very high probability of having high-intensity earthquakes.

He also went on to mention the importance of awareness and civil engineering in terms of saving lives during and after any natural disaster. Even though the intensity of the tremors felt in the NCR region was not significant, they managed to send people fleeing from their homes to the streets.
