Bhopal- On Tuesday, two bodies were discovered on the banks of the Runj river in the state's Panna district. The remains, according to a senior administration official in the city, were those of locals, one of whom died of cancer and the other of old age.

Residents say that four to five bodies were discovered in the Runj river, which serves as a drinking water supply for the cattle of the village. "We fear an epidemic might break in our village due to these bodies which have been floating in the river since the last five to six days," a resident said.

The Panna DC however said that only two bodies were found, not four to five. "One body was of a 95-year-old villager. Another was of a cancer patient, Both are from Nandanpur village. The village sarpanch has told us that both bodies were immersed and not cremated in the river as part of a long-standing tradition Both bodies were retrieved on Tuesday and were buried safely," the DC said.

Earlier in Buxar, reports of decomposed and half-burnt mortal remains of COVID-infected patients were found floating in the river Ganga, following which the states of UP and Bihar started blaming each other as to who is responsible for this. Bihar government claimed to have retrieved 71 corpses, which were later cremated after an autopsy. More bodies have been discovered 55 kilometers upriver from Buxar in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.

Furthermore, videos of a bridge near the Bihar border in Saran district have been circulating on social media. In the footage, corpses are seen being tossed into the water by ambulances that have stopped at the scene.

Ambulances are said to have arrived from both Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, according to locals. Balliya district is in Uttar Pradesh, just across the border.

The bodies have floated down into Bihar from Uttar Pradesh, according to Bihar minister Sanjay Kumar Jha.
