New Delhi: Congress leader, Rahul Gandhiled a march from Parliament's Gandhi statue to Vijay Chowk to protest the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha MPs, calling the action "a symbol of the crushing of the voice of the people of India."
"Their cries were drowned out. They haven't done anything wrong. We are not allowed to debate important issues in legislatures." In answer to a question on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the House, Gandhi, according to the Congressman, said: "In the middle of the cacophony, Bill after Bill is passed into law in Parliament. This is not the way the House of Commons should be run. The Prime Minister does not pay a visit to the Oval Office. We are not allowed to bring up any national security issues. It is democracy's premature demise."
In response to the Lakhimpur Kheri riots, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the minister's son had slain farmers, and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was aware of this, but that no action had been taken.
"The fact is that a few businesspeople dislike farmers... These MPs were suspended by a force that intends to steal farmers' income, not by the RS chairman or the PM. Only the Prime Minister and the Chairman may make decisions "he said
Opposition leaders gathered earlier in the day in Mallikarjun Kharge's office, the Rajya Sabha's Leader of the Opposition, to decide how to keep the agitation going. The suspension of the MPs has left both houses of Parliament in a continual state of disarray.
