NEW DELHI: In a significant development, the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has granted approval for the Women's Reservation Bill. This decision comes following a meeting chaired by PM Modi, which followed the commencement of Parliament's five-day special session.
During the earlier announcement of the special session, PM Modi had promised "historic decisions." The Women's Reservation Bill seeks to allocate 33 percent of all seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. Furthermore, the bill proposes sub-reservations for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and Anglo-Indians within the 33 percent quota. It also suggests the rotation of reserved seats after each general election.
Union Minister of State Prahlad Singh Patel initially posted his congratulations on social media but later deleted the post. Tamil Nadu BJP leader and actress Kushboo Sundar celebrated the development as a "historic moment," highlighting the significance of women's empowerment. She expressed gratitude to PM Modi for his dedication to supporting and uplifting women in the nation.
"Only the Modi government had the moral courage to fulfill the demand for women's reservation. Which was proved by the approval of the cabinet. Congratulations PM Narendra Modi and congratulations to the PM Modi government," Union Minister of State Prahlad Singh Patel posted on X, but deleted the post later."Only a true son of the nation understands the pain of a woman. And our H'ble PM proves that yet again. Heartfelt thank you to Pradhan Mantri ji. Women of our nation our indebted to you for always standing by her and allowing her to grow and fly high," she added thanking PM Modi.
The cabinet meeting was attended by Union ministers including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi, S Jaishankar, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, Nitin Gadkari and Arjun Ram Meghwal.
Ever since it was announced that the Parliament session would be held from September 18-22, there has been speculation on various bills, including the women's reservation bill.
