United Nations FAO Recognizes Mumbai As 'Tree City Of The World'

Earlier in January, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had applied for the award of worldwide recognition citing its various tree plantation initiatives.

MUMBAI: In a recent achievement for the densely populated Indian city of Mumbai, the United Nations FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) for maintaining urban greenery has recognized the city as the 'Tree city of the world'.

It the remarkable that the city has received such recognition despite the rapidly expanding urbanization and amid the grim reports of growing climate change due to human activity.

It is noteworthy that the largest city in India on the west coast was among the 138 cities from 21 countries worldwide awarded for preserving nature amid the growing urbanization.

Meanwhile, the garden department officials of BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) said that the financial centre of India Mumbai has gained recognition for its commitment to maintaining greenery and planting urban trees in developing healthy, joyful and resilient cities.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization in collaboration with the Ador Day Foundation has presented these cities from different nations with recognition of their commitment to planting and maintaining trees which results in healthy and happy places for survival.

The cities getting the recognition have well preserved the greenery in their places by taking care of nature through various initiatives of growing trees.

Jeetendra Pardeshi who is the superintendent of Gardens stated that the UN 'Tree City of the World' programme gives assistance, directions, and global recognition for communities' dedication to its urban jungles.

Moreover, the programme provides a framework for a sustainable and healthy urban forestry much needed in present environmental conditions across the world said the superintendent.

Earlier in January this year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation had applied for the award of worldwide recognition citing the various tree plantation initiative, several tree care tasks and Miyawaki forests.

Mumbai is the 2nd city of India to get the title of 'Tree City in the World' as earlier Hyderabad got the recognition for two consecutive years.
