UP gangster Vikas Dubey shot dead after road mishap, police claim he tried to flee

Guwahati: Uttar Pradesh's notorious gangster Vikas Dubey, who was arrested in Madhya Pradesh's Ujjain on Thursday, was gunned down in an encounter early on Friday, 10 July, police said.

Dubey was arrested on Thursday by Madhya Pradesh police from Mahakal temple. He had been on the run since July 3 when police tried to raid his village, Bikru, near Kanpur. SP Kanpur West confirmed that Gangster Vikas Dubey attempted to flee after a road mishap.

It has been reported that a vehicle that was a part of the convoy of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) that was bringing Dubey back from Madhya Pradesh to Kanpur had overturned.

"Gangster Vikas Dubey attempted to flee after the car overturned. The police tried to make him surrender, during which he fired at the policemen. He was injured in retaliatory firing by police. He was later rushed to the hospital." Kanpur West SP stated. 

Visuals after the incident showed Dubey being taken away on a stretcher to the emergency ward, he was confirmed dead. The Police officials also informed that the policemen accompanying the criminal have also been injured in the incident.

Dubey, a notorious gangster, had around 60 cases against him, including kidnapping, murder and attempt to murder. It is to be noted that hours before Dubey's arrest, two of his aides were shot dead in separate encounters.

It needs mention here that eight policemen were killed on Friday when they went in a large team to Bikru village in Chaubeypur area of Kanpur to arrest Vikas Dubey, charged in 60 criminal cases including murder, kidnapping, extortion, and rioting. According to reports, Dubey was informed by local police, and lay an ambush on the cops. Dubey and his men fired upon the police with assault rifles from rooftops, killing 8 of them.
