The UP government on Saturday has decided to hand over the entire probe into the Hathras 'gangrape' case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

After meeting the Hathras victim's family, they demanded a judicial inquiry through the Supreme Court along with suspension of the district magistrate.

On Saturday, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi met the family and ensured that they will fight for justice to the Dalit woman who died after being allegedly gang-raped.

The move comes at a time when the Uttar Pradesh government and UP police have been under intense public and political pressure over their handling of the Hathras case.

While speaking to sources, following the  government's announcement of a CBI probe, the victim's family said they were not satisfied with it. "We do not want a CBI probe Yogi ji...We want a judicial probe," one of the family member asserted.

The Special Investigation team initiated by the UP Police to probe the Hathras rape and murder case also visited the victim's house  to record her father's statement.

The investigation team said in a statement "We were here to record the father's statement. He was not in a condition to give a statement today. We will come again tomorrow."

Amid the continuous outrage regarding the CBI probe, Yogi ji stated while the probe has been recommended, the SIT will complete its investigation irrespective of it and submit its report.

Earlier in the same day, the UP Police head HC Awasthi informed the decision to cremate the 19-year-old Dalit woman at night was taken by the local administration and he wont be able to comment on it.

DGP HC Awasthi told sources "I cannot comment anything on this. The decision was taken at the local administration level. I can't comment on it,"

It is to be mentioned that this was the first official statement delivered by the UP Police regarding the allegations that it forcefully cremated the victim even though her family was protesting against it.
