Zika Outbreak In India: Kanpur Becomes Hotspot With 89 Cases of Zika Virus Infection

Along with, alerting the city, the authority has launched a massive vector control drive to curb the spread of the virus.

Kanpur: With addition of 10 people, including three India Air force personnel testing positive for the Zika Virus, the total tally has jumped to 89 so far.

The city which is famous for its leather products has become the hotspot for the mosquito-borne disease. However, the local authority has tightened its belt to contain the spread of the deadly Zika virus.

Along with, alerting the city, the authority has launched a massive vector control drive to curb the spread of the virus.

Reportedly, those who came in the close contact of infected people and living in the radius of 3 km of the IAF station, the health teams have collected their samples.

On October 23rd, the first case was reported in the leather city when a warrant officer of Indian Air Force (IAF) tested positive for the infection.

While speaking to Reuters, Dr. Nepal Singh, Chief Medical Officer of Kanpur district asserted that the city has witnessed rise in Zika virus cases following which the health department has formed numerous teams to contain the spread.

"There is one woman who is pregnant and we are paying special attention towards her," he added.

Meanwhile, fearing the possible outbreak of the Zika virus, Assam has too sounded an alert.

Reportedly, the state health department is mulling to direct all district health authorities to test samples of those who visited the city from the areas where the fresh cases have emerged.
