NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy's frontline guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao successfully tested a combined India-Russia BrahMos supersonic cruise missile.

According to reports,” INS Mormugao, the latest guided-missile Destroyer, successfully hit 'Bulls Eye' during her maiden #Brahmos Supersonic cruise missile firing. The ship and her potent weapon, both indigenous, mark another shining symbol of #Aatmanirbharta and Indian Navy's firepower at sea.”

BrahMos, on the other hand, is a medium-range missile named after two rivers: India's Brahmaputra and Russia's Moskva which can be fired from submarines, warships, aircraft, and land.

The BrahMos missile travels at 2.8 Mach, or nearly three times the speed of sound. BrahMos missiles are also exported by India.

In January 2022, India's BrahMos Aerospace and the Philippines signed a contract for over $375 million for the Philippine Marines to acquire three batteries of the BrahMos cruise missile, providing a boost to India's efforts to become a major defence hardware exporter.

Meanwhile, according to rumours, the Philippines was ready to become the first country to purchase the BrahMos missile, but the plan was thwarted owing to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia have expressed interest in the BrahMos, which has a range of 290 km and can carry a 200-kg warhead.

India joined the privileged club of nations capable of firing a Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) interceptor from a naval platform in April 2023, when the weapon system underwent its first test off the coast of the eastern province of Odisha.

The successful test was announced by the Ministry of Defence (Mod) in New Delhi in a statement. However, additional information was not immediately accessible.

According to the report,” Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully conducted a maiden flight trial of sea-based endo-atmospheric interceptor missile off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal on April 21, 2023.”

However, in 2022, India successfully tested a land-based BMD system capable of neutralising adversary ballistic missile threats. The DRDO of India successfully conducted the inaugural flight test of the BMD interceptor, codenamed AD-1 missile, with a huge kill altitude bracket.
